How it works on a cellular level
Cold (cryotherapy)
Narrows the blood vessels (vasoconstriction) and can thereby reduce inflammatory mediators and swelling, lower cellular metabolism and oxygen demand, and protect tissue from secondary damage. Slowed nerve conduction can relieve pain.
Heat (thermotherapy)
Widens the vessels (vasodilation) and can thereby increase circulation, deliver more oxygen and nutrients and flush out metabolic waste. Increased cellular activity can support healing and relax muscles.
Contrast (cold + heat)
